The Owner
Matthew Smail is from Annapolis, Maryland, and moved to Raleigh in 2020 with the goal of building a career in the pond industry. After relocating, he spent several years working hands-on with one of the Triangle’s top pond companies, gaining extensive experience in pond cleanouts, maintenance, repairs, lighting, and custom water feature installations.
In 2025, Matthew founded Second Nature Ponds with a clear purpose: to offer professional pond services with a personal touch. When you work with Second Nature, you’re working directly with Matthew. From the first phone call to the final detail of the job, he’s the one on your property, answering your questions, and making sure the work gets done right.
